GETTING LUCKY ON DESIGN LOTUS

I’m so thrilled and excited! Amy Ehmann of Design Lotus has chosen me to feature as one of her first interviews on her new (and super gorgeous) blog. I was lucky enough to meet her at a visit to minted in San Francisco, but I’ve been a huge admirer of her design work for much longer. You can check out her beautiful work, brand new blog and read the interview here

INSPIRATION 3: BRIGHTS + BOLDLY STATED

I couldn’t resist these modern brights to inspire my newest invitation design. I found this gorgeous image of spray painted sterling flatware by sania pell on creature comforts blog, and used this as a jumping-off point for my ‘brilliant and bold initials’ design (entered on minted.com). I just love the way the brilliant color works with the neutral backdrop of sterling pieces! For my second inspiration image (on right) I also discovered this gorgeous bride photo on brooklyn bride and used it, not only as a color palette reference, but also as an inspiration for scale in my composition. In the same way the large balloon has exaggerated proportions, I was inspired in my design to inflate both the electric energy of brilliant colors and the scale of my typography. The end result: Saturated accents of color in a simple, modern composition. Check out the resulting design (below) or visit the design here to vote for it on minted.com

INSPIRATION 2: CHRISTMAS + CONFETTI

Christmas came early! A Few months ago, I created several holiday designs for minted.com‘s annual holiday contest. Just today I learned that my Confetti Scatter design placed at no.8! (that’s out of over 2000 entries–and i’m just thrilled) In order to celebrate in appropriate style, check out some of the imagery that inspired the design: For the design below, I referenced hand-cut paper goods and focused on a crafty-yet-simple vibe. Then I came across this glass studded linen shift dress, and couldn’t resist creating a design that pays homage to its casual scattering of jewels against a low-key linen backdrop. For more of my holiday work, check out my stuff under my Kelli Hall Storefront.

INSPIRATION 1: MUMS + MIXERS

Welcome!! I’ve created this space to document and share my design process and reveal those snippets that inspire my stationery pieces. For my first post, i decided it was only fitting to share my two favorite things that inspired my blog design. I’ve referenced my beloved Kitchen Aid mixer (in a fabulous frost color!) With clean lines and simple styling, I wanted to translate the feel of the object into the feel of my layout and details. To keep things from feeling too sterile, i also referenced photos of mums and carnations…drawing on their warmth and friendliness to keep things feeling happy and inviting…
